I think we should get into the habit of having breakfast in a café or restaurant more often, ideally when you have the day off and are not in a rush.
Yes, there are advantages of making your own breakfast at home (you don’t have to get dressed, brush your hair, leave the house), but think about it this way: somebody else is cooking delicious food for you for which you didn’t have the ingredients at home anyway, you don’t have to clean up after yourself and you are already out and about and can go on to spend the day doing something more exciting/different/educational/cultural/entertaining than sitting on the sofa and watching reruns of Murder She Wrote.
The Coin Laundry, the restaurant with the retro twist in Exmouth Market (see our article about the opening), has a brand new morning menu and though some of the dishes are a bit too strong for my taste that early in the morning (Onion bhaji & fried egg baps or Sardines on Toast), there is plenty of other things to choose from.
Smaller dishes include Buttered Crumpets & Jam, Grilled Grapefruit with Brown Sugar and Strawberry Porridge.
Large dishes include vegetarian options like Banana Pancakes, Green Eggs on Toast and Omelette Primavera. Meat-eaters can look forward to Corned Beef & Bovril Hash, and old favourites like Ham, Egg & Chips, Eggy Bread & Bacon Bap, and Potato Waffle with Sausage & Fried Egg or a Full English Breakfast.
Our breakfast was excellent and we enjoyed it very much, like all the food we have eaten at the Coin Laundry in the past. G had the grapefruit to start, followed by the Full English and I had the porridge and the potato waffle washed down with fresh orange juice and cappuccinos. Portions were generous and the service quick and friendly.
My only quibble is that I am missing a few lighter options on the menu, which is very protein/carb heavy, maybe yoghurt or muesli with fresh fruit, especially now that summer is here.
But other than that, the Coin Laundry remains one of our favourite restaurants and bars in this part of town for breakfast, lunch, dinner or drinks.
