Lotus Bar @ Darbaar

If you haven’t been to Darbaar you should change that as soon as you can. This Indian restaurant, a few minutes walk from Liverpool Street Station and Broadgate Circle, in the City of London is pretty special. Opened in 2015 by award-winning Chef Abdul Yaseen, formerly of Cinnamon Club, Cinnamon Kitchen and Anise, this stunning restaurant is inspired by the banquets of the Indian Royal Court and serves the most wonderful and delicious dishes. The butter chicken is fantastic! No wonder it won the prestigious Best Newcomer Award in the British Curry Awards 2016!

But I am going to leave writing abaout the restaurant for another time; today I am going to introduce you to Lotus Bar @ Darbaar which recently relaunched with a brand new cocktail menu inspired by “flavours and spices of India and the opulence of its Royal Courts”. The bar is completely separate from the restaurant and the atmosphere is peaceful and relaxed; the rich colours of the velvet seating, the well-stocked mirrored bar and the luxurious flower arrangements give the venue an air of exclusivity, and the service is excellent.

Cocktails include classics with a spicy twist, like the Cinnamon Mai Tai, the Chaitini, and the Haldi Margarita with a dusting of turmeric, along with fruity favourites, for example Strawberry Mojito and Mogli’s Temple, an excellent Tiki drink with rum, honey, mango and passion fruit. There are so many to choose from! But if you are not into cocktails, there is a long list of beers, wines and spirits to keep you happy.

The bar food gives you a taste of Abdul’s kitchen and includes freshly baked Indian breads, snacks like Masala Cumin Olives, Gun Powdered Nuts and Jhaal Muri Puffed Rice, as well as vegetable or lamb Tandoori Momos (dumplings). For the larger appetite there is the unbelievable Desi Chilli Chicken, Kerlan Hot and Sweet Shrimps and a selection of kebabs: Salmon Coconut & Kokum, Red Spiced Chicken Tikka and Gilafi lamb Seekh Kebab. Or what about Indian pizza? Nanza with Chilli Chicken & Cheddar is delicious I should know, as I once made my own at a Darbaar Nanza MasterClass!
