The Blues Brothers – Summer Special

The Blues Brothers – Summer Special

★★★★★

Hold on to your hats (and shades) – the Blues Brothers are back in town!

For a limited time only (until 26 August), you can find Jake, Elwood and their friends partying at the Hippodrome Theatre in London’s West End, shaking their tail feathers and doing the twist in this iconic rock’n’roll show that is not to be missed.

Joshua Mumby as Elwood Blues and David Kristopher-Brown as Jake Blues are absolutely brilliant- these guys are channelling the Blues Brothers big time. They’ve got the voices, dance moves and mannerisms down to a T and if you squint a bit, it could easily be Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi up there on stage. Joshua and David are both reprising their roles after appearing as the Blues Brothers in the West End Xmas Special in 2015, as well as the Lowry Theatre, Manchester and Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Helen Hart and Hannah Kee, as the Stax Sisters, are also Blues Brothers veterans  and so much more than backing singers and dancers (Helen’s version of Aretha Franklin’s Respect is something else) and when they or new cast member Arnold Mabhena as Ray take over the mic, you’ll be blown away. Please don’t ask me, who my favourite is, because they are all fantastic.

And then there is, of course, the excellent (and very funny) Blues Brothers Band. There is so much talent on stage! The voices, the dancing, the music – definitely a 5-star treat, even if you’re a Blues Brothers novice you’ll love it! And I can guarantee that you will get off your chair to dance and sing along.

The show features 20 of the most popular rock ‘n’ roll, gospel, blues and soul classics of all time – songs include Gimme Some Lovin’, Jailhouse Rock, Soul Man, Everybody Needs Somebody To Love, Think and my all time favourite Do You Love Me, as well as crowd pleaser Minnie the Moocher and the hilarious Theme from Rawhide/Stand By Your Man– and the show was created with the blessing of the team behind the original Blues Brothers, so you know you are getting quality. And this Summer Special also includes some never-seen-before material created under the guidance of Judith Belushi, with summery hits like Tequila, Dock of the Bay, Heatwave and many more.

Go on, join the party – you won’t regret it!

The Hippodrome’s 230-seat cabaret theatre is hosting The Blues Brothers – Summer Special, which is produced by Hartshorn – Hook Productions and the Hippodrome and directed by the clearly multi-talented Joshua Mumby, with choreography by Lily Howkins and musical direction by James Robert Ball.
