After a very successful summer residence, Skylight has returned to London’s Wapping bigger and better than before and this time with a decidedly wintry theme. Think ice skating, cosy blankets, cheesy fondue and mulled wine and you get the picture. We recently went along to the opening party to see for ourselves what Skylight is all about.
The jewel in the crown of Skylight is the roof top ice rink – the only one in London, where you can skate under the stars with London sparkling in the background. Tickets are just £10 for a 45 minute session on real ice. The rink might not be the biggest in town but it certainly has the best views and plenty of room to practice the toe loop and the double Salchow, as was demonstrated to us by a professional ice skater. If ice skating is not your thing, you can also try your hand at shooting ice hockey penalties on the lower floor, £3 for 10 shots and there are offers and prizes to be won.
There are several bars and plenty of seating available on all levels, with a chique heated lounge in a marquee on the raised deck, overlooking the ice rink and with great views of some of London’s most iconic buildings, including the Shard. Then there is the large Pergola bar, also heated and on the rooftop, and lastly – and new to Skylight – a fully enclosed bar on the lower level, which has an almost cave like atmosphere with its low ceiling and fake fur throws, where you can warm up with hot or cold drinks and cocktails (try the Apple Crumble – it’s delicious) and a variety of wines, spirits, and ciders and beers including Coors Light, Blue Moon, Wolf Rock and Rekorderlig.
Here you also find the food traders including street food from Yiro and a fondue station serving cheese pots for up to six people to share at their table – the ultimate après skate snack. Skylight’s cheese fondue starts at £14.95 per person with tables available to book in advance. Skylight also offers a delicious chocolate fondue at £9.95 per person for those with a sweet tooth.
Check Skylights website for special events and one-off parties with some of London’s best DJs. You can also book Skylight for private and corporate bookings of all sizes.
We really enjoyed our time at Skylight and it is a fantastic place to bring your family for skating lessons on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, your colleagues for after-work drinks or your mates to start the weekend party in London’s East End.
