Tolu Coker: Juvenile Consciousness AW19 – LFW

Tolu Coker, the AW19 Merit Award Winner, brought her forward thinking and diverse new collection ‘Juvenile Consciousness’ to the runways of London Fashion Week, which showcased at Fashion Scout, Freemasons Hall in February, 2019.

The unisex fashion brand, which serves as a creative outlet for youthful expression and political reform, centres itself on inclusivity, diversity, and aims to change the social and economic climate with new emerging identities. The brands fluidity and environmental consciousness are showcased throughout the collection. Embracing Tolu’s dual heritage and cultures, she utilizes both traditional artisan craftsmanship and modern technology.

With classic yet casual silhouettes of hoodies and jeans, paired with Nigerian tribal head pieces, the collection is a catalyst for freedom, and urges consumers to move towards buying more investment pieces, and shines a light on the importance of reducing our carbon footprint. Tolu‘s collection is crafted with reworked denims, recycled leathers and re-used plastic and lace scraps, and manages to take our breath away so effortlessly.

The Nigerian born London designer has undertaken several successful stints at Maison Margiela, J.W. Anderson and Celine, and has teamed up with the likes of Doc Martens, Swatch and Illy.  She was shortlisted as a finalist in the ASOS Fashion Discovery 2018 award, and a triple-award winner of the globally-acclaimed ITS 2018, taking home numerous awards across both the Fashion and Artwork categories – The Diesel Award, the Vogue Talents Award and the ITS Time for Coffee Away.

As such an innovative and passionate designer, we reminisce of the models walking to their own beat, boom boxes blaring, long hair flowing, and for a brief moment we were part of Tolu Coker’s story, embracing the freedom, love and acceptance of the brand, and we could easily see why she is one to watch.
