It’s been 125 years since A Diary Of a Nobody by George and Wheedon Grossmith was first published in weekly instalments in the satirical magazine Punch and it has since become one of the great classic British comedy novels. One of my favourite authors, Evelyn Waugh, even called it “the funniest book in the world”, high praise indeed. The Diary records the daily events in the lives of a London bank clerk with aspirations beyond his social status, Charles Pooter, his long suffering wife Carrie, his wayward son Lupin, and numerous friends and acquaintances over a period of just over a year.

In this four part BBC adaptation, first broadcast in 2007, one of Britain’s finest acting talents, Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey, Paddington), takes on one of Victorian England’s most enduring comic creations and brings the diary to life. Adapted by Andrew Davies (Pride and Prejudice, War and Peace) and directed by Susanna White (Bleak House, Jane Eyre), one of Britain’s most entertaining novels arrives on DVD, on demand and download on 12 June 2017 courtesy of Second Sight.
